Lockheed Martin, U.S. Army Demonstrate HALE-D During Abbreviated Flight | Lockheed Martin

AKRON, Ohio, July 27th, 2011 -- The U.S. Army and Lockheed Martin launched the first-of-its kind High Altitude Long Endurance-Demonstrator this morning, demonstrating a number of key technologies critical to development of unmanned airships.

The aircraft successfully launched at 5:47 a.m. out of the Airdock in Akron, Ohio. The airship reached an altitude of approximately 32,000 feet, however, a technical anomaly prevented the airship from attaining its target altitude of 60,000 feet and the HALE-D team decided to terminate the flight.

The aircraft descended without incident at 8:26 a.m. in southwestern Pennsylvania to a predetermined landing location.  Lockheed Martin is coordinating with state and local authorities to recover the airship.  We have confirmed that no injuries or damage were experienced during this landing in a heavily wooded area.

But Lockheed Martin officials said the flight was terminated at 7:25 a.m. and no one is saying what happened.

Harrison County Sheriff Joe Myers said although it was expected to land in Harrison County , it did not . Myers said he heard it had landed in Greene County, Pa.

Once it was launched people here in the Ohio Valley starting call the 7 Newsroom reporting seeing what they called a UFO.

The aircraft was launched and was expected to hover in an area above Eastern Central, Ohio at about 60,000 feet for an extended period and complete a series of communications tests for the U.S. Army.

The airship was expected to descend in a remote area of Harrison County, where the military owns property.

But again the flight was terminated early this morning. "

Why wouldn't they just say something about it on the evening news to warn ppl? Because then they wouldn't have a story for the following evening's news,
